YEAR 6 MOCK TRIAL COMPETITION

The Year 6 Mock Trial Competition (Y6MTC) is an annual event hosted by the Greater Manchester Magistrates' in the Community team.
It involves the students acting out a trial in which they play all the major roles including magistrates, solicitors, defendant, and witnesses. One school takes on the role of prosecution and the other defence.
The student magistrates determine the verdict at the end of the trial. A verdict of guilty or not guilty does not affect the result of the competition, it all depends upon how well the students perform during the trial.
Due to demand, we held Local Heats for the first time in 2025. These included a total of 32 schools, with over 200 children taking part. For 2026 the Local Heats had 58 schools from across Greater Manchester, and almost 350 children took part.
The Grand Final has the winners and runners up from the Local Heats. Previously this involved sixteen schools and over 100 children. It started at about 8.45 and finished by 1.45.
We have previously been able to assist with the cost of transport to the venues for the Local Heats and the Grand Final when required. We hope to be able to continue to do so.
In addition to the mock trials, there were other activities provided for the students during the Grand Final event.
